Debt-for-Nature Swap (DNS)

A debt-for-nature swap represents any environmental-conditional debt relief between creditors and debtor country in order to drive improvement of marine, biodiversity, and climate conditions in a debtor country. This definition already takes into account recent evolution in the literature and is wider than original scholarship on DNS, which traditionally focuses on a narrower and more specific interpretation of DNS, where a portion of a debtor nation’s foreign debt is forgiven, suspended, converted into new financing at a lower interest rate or repurchased, in return for commitments to fund local nature conservation initiatives.
