Valuing Nature: From Local Lakes to Global Markets

OPEN DAY

Valuing Nature: From Local Lakes to Global Markets

Monday, 9 November

12:30–13:30 CET

Why attend?

Whether your focus is nature finance, agriculture, water quality or biodiversity, this free webinar shows how ecological change is reflected in economic valuations and financial markets.

Local Lakes: Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the UK and Ireland, is turning green, choked by recurrent toxic cyanobacterial blooms that threaten public health, local recreation and commercial fisheries. This is more than an ecological tragedy; it is the severe depreciation of a major natural capital asset. We show how site-level economic valuation can quantify the lake’s total economic value and identify which ecosystem services are most critical to preserve.

Global Markets: Local ecological decline raises a wider question: how do nature-related risks reverberate across international capital markets? First, we test whether biodiversity-themed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can deliver a “dual win”, tracking broad benchmarks without sacrificing risk-adjusted returns. Second, we examine whether daily biodiversity news sentiment influences soybean futures prices.
