As part of the International Science Festival Gothenburg, the University of Gothenburg, a key partner in the BIOFIN-EU project, participated in the “Fika med forskare” event on 19 April 2026 at Eva’s Paley in Gothenburg. This open, science café format invited visitors of diverse background to sit down with researchers in an informal setting, enjoy coffee and conversation, and explore current research through direct dialogue. The event brought together researchers from the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers, creating a welcoming environment where participants could ask questions, discover diverse research fields, and better understand how science connects to everyday life.
Around 50 participants from a wide range of backgrounds joined the event, contributing to vibrant exchanges on sustainability, environmental values, and society’s relationship with nature. The open-day format sparked strong interest and lively discussions, especially around how non-market values can be better captured in policy, and the vital role that green spaces play in people’s lives.
For BIOFIN-EU, this engagement was particularly valuable because it strengthened dialogue between researchers and various stakeholders, helping translate complex ideas about biodiversity, ecosystem services, and inclusive valuation into accessible public conversations. By reaching beyond academic audiences, UG’s participation supported BIOFIN-EU’s mission to improve understanding of biodiversity’s social and economic importance, while encouraging broader public reflection on how policy can better integrate environmental values into decision-making. Through this event, BIOFIN-EU advanced its goals of fostering awareness, stakeholder engagement, and more inclusive approaches to sustainable futures.
