On June 16, 2026, the BIOFIN-EU project hosted an engaging online event: the “Biodiversity & Finance Education Co-Creation Workshop“. The goal was simple but ambitious: to bring together participants to exchange ideas and co-create solutions for integrating biodiversity into finance and business school teaching.
As the biodiversity crisis intensifies, the financial sector is increasingly expected to understand nature-related risks and support nature-positive outcomes. However, educators face a major challenge: there is a significant gap in teaching materials, and translating complex biodiversity science into practical finance education is not easy.
Introducing the BIOFIN-EU Knowledge Accelerators
To bridge this gap, speakers Prof. John Garvey from the University of Limerick (UL) and Estela Castelli Florino Pilz from Sulitest (SUL) introduced the BIOFIN-EU Knowledge Accelerators. These are flexible, open educational resources designed to help educators easily adapt and bring nature-related topics into their existing modules.
Interactive Glossary: A reference tool to help students and educators navigate complex terminology around Nature-based Solutions and finance concepts.
Case Studies: Real-world examples showing how biodiversity intersects with investment decisions, risk management, and corporate strategy, making it much more tangible for finance education.
Curated Learning Resources: A flexible collection of materials to support educators in preparing their courses and students exploring the topic further.
Interactive Quiz (Future Development): A 15-minute, plug-and-play multiple-choice quiz that provides immediate feedback to help learners grasp key concepts in a fun, interactive way before engaging with the case studies.
Co-Creation and Real-World Challenges
A core part of the agenda was audience interaction and feedback. The workshop wasn’t just about presenting tools; it was about exchanging ideas to ensure these educational resources tackle real industry hurdles.
People asked great questions about real-world problems. For example, one of the topics was how to group small, local nature projects together so that big banks will actually want to invest in them.
Questions like this highlight exactly why the BIOFIN-EU project exists. Our overarching vision is to innovate new approaches for capturing, aggregating, and analysing biodiversity data to minimise transaction and reporting costs. By including these real-world challenges in our resources, the Knowledge Accelerators will prepare the next generation of professionals to structure these exact types of sustainable portfolios.
Looking Ahead
Equipping future finance professionals with the right knowledge is a critical step in our mission to “Flip the script: Unlock finance to protect and restore biodiversity“. We want to thank everyone who participated and shared their valuable insights to the workshop.
Stay tuned to our website for updates on when the complete Knowledge Accelerators will be available!
