3 MARCH | WORLD WILDLIFE DAY
Earth is home to an astonishing diversity of wildlife, from the majestic elephants roaming the African savannas to the tiny bioluminescent creatures lighting up the depths of the ocean. Wildlife plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining life as we know it. However, human activities, climate change, and habitat destruction pose serious threats to these incredible species.

THE THREATS FACING WILDLIFE
Wildlife populations are declining at an alarming rate, with the World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report indicating an average decrease of 73% since 1970. Freshwater species have experienced an 85% decline, while terrestrial and marine populations have dropped by 69% and 56%, respectively.

One of the biggest threats to wildlife is habitat destruction, which occurs when forests, wetlands, grasslands, and other natural environments are cleared or degraded for human activities.

Poaching and illegal wildlife trade is a multi-billion-dollar industry that drives many species toward extinction.

When invasive (non-native) species are introduced to an ecosystem—either accidentally or intentionally—they can outcompete, prey on, or spread diseases to native wildlife.

Rising temperatures, extreme weather events and ocean acidification are some of the results of climate change, altering ecosystems in ways that many species cannot adapt to quickly enough.

Pollution (plastics, oil, chemicals, air and noise) affects wildlife in many ways, from poisoning water sources to entangling animals in plastic waste.

Overfishing and unsustainable hunting depletes fish populations faster than they can reproduce, disrupting entire marine food webs.
THE URGENCY OF ACTION
These threats are accelerating at an alarming rate, and if no action is taken, we could see the extinction of many species within our lifetime. World Wildlife Day serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to protect and restore nature, aligning closely with the mission of the BIOFIN-EU project. The theme of this year’s World Wildlife Day challenges us all to recognize that investing in wildlife is investing in our own future—a future where both people and the planet can flourish together.
Financial investments are crucial for protecting endangered species and their habitats while promoting biodiversity. With its motto, “Flip the script—Unlock finance to protect and restore biodiversity”, the BIOFIN-EU project aims to unlock financial flows crucial for safeguarding and restoring biodiversity, aligning with the EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy (SFT) to support the EU’s 2050 climate goals.
By shifting financial priorities and mobilizing resources for conservation, we can safeguard ecosystems, support sustainable development, and create a future where both nature and people thrive. Unlocking biodiversity finance is not just about funding projects—it is about reshaping our economic systems to prioritize life on Earth.

A FUTURE FOR WILDLIFE
Earth’s wildlife is a vital part of our planet’s ecosystems, and protecting it is essential for our own survival. By taking action today, we can ensure that future generations will continue to marvel at the incredible creatures that share our world.
Let’s celebrate and protect Earth’s wildlife—because when nature thrives, so do we.
